Nantucket Lightship

This is the Nantucket Lightship that George was hoping we'd get to see on Sunday. It used to function in the same way as a lighthouse only on a ship off the shoals of Nantucket. The first lightship off Nantucket was commissioned in 1854. They are no longer used and this ship is kept as a reminder of those days. Also, this is where the 'Nantucket Baskets' came to be. The men started making them to fill their long days and nights at duty off the shore. They would then sell them or give them as gifts. Now, Nantucket baskets are very expensive and highly prized.
