Animals!

It's not just the humans who suffered during Katrina and Rita. The animals had a tough time too. There are many organizations who rescued the animals such as ifaw and animal rescue leagues from all over the country. We even had an animal rescue officer from Dennis who went to New Orleans for weeks and rescued hundreds of animals and is helping to get them to their original owners or to get them adopted. Everyone wants to help humans and animals in a crisis. Thank God for all the hundreds of volunteers who were willing to help in any way.

IF anything good has come out of the Katrina tragedy, it is that people have become aware it that pets must be included in disaster evacuation plans. My organization, IFAW, and many others, have seen the heartbreaking results of people leaving their pets behind during the Katrina evacutation. We are still working to reunite as many pets as possible with their families.

Just a quick update on the Katrina animals...Through the combined efforts of IFAW, HSUS, LSU, ASPCA, Best Friends, and other dedicated organizations, 90% of pets have either been reunited with their families or are in foster care while their families look for new housing. There were many amazing rescue stories, check out the website www.ifaw.org to read some of them, watch videos, etc.
